What is arterial hypertension?
Hypertension is an abnormal increase in blood pressure. The latter is the energy with which the blood circulates in the vessels and depends on the thrust impressed by the heart and the elasticity of the vessels, the stiffer they are, the higher the pressure will be.
Hypertension, if left untreated, can cause damage to vital organs such as the heart, brain and kidneys.
According to the NHANES (National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the largest public health control body in the USA), out of 100 hypertensive patients only 68.4% know that they are hypertensive; only 53.6% are treated and only 27.4% achieve optimal control of values after treatment.
Symptoms of hypertension
Often it is absolutely asymptomatic at least until the disease is secondary to the damage caused by hypertension itself (e.g. heart attack, stroke, etc.); sometimes non-specific symptoms such as headache (headache), dizziness, ringing in the ears, twinkle in the eyes.
Causes of hypertension
In the vast majority of cases (essential hypertension) there is not a single cause but a set of causes including, for example, familiarity (in a small percentage – secondary hypertension), renal, cardiac, hormonal causes, which are well identifiable and it is in these cases that the therapy will be aimed at removing the cause that causes hypertension; in the other cases, with rare exceptions, one must treat for life.
