Diagnostic examinations

For over 30 years a point of reference for the territory.

Diagnostic examinations

The Diagnostic Center is located in Via Marche 24 and is adjacent to the Nursing Home Villa Silvia. The modern structure is equipped with the most advanced technologies suitable to perform all the examinations in the field of diagnostic imaging, both in private and in agreement with the National Health Service (by means of a commitment issued by the treating doctor).

Thanks to our experience and our high quality standards, for over thirty years we have represented a regional reference point and we allow our clients to carry out their diagnostic examinations in a highly professional manner, with waiting times much shorter than those normally offered by public facilities.

Between the booking and the actual carrying out of a specialist examination at the Villa Silvia Diagnostic Centre, in fact, the waiting time that elapses is on average less than 3 days: a result that allows us to offer a quick and effective service, both for the examinations agreed upon and those carried out privately, with extremely competitive costs.

Bone Densitometry

Bone Densitometry is an examination that, through the use of a small dose of X-rays, allows to evaluate the mineral density of bones. Depending on diagnostic needs, it can be carried out either on the entire skeleton or on individual segments of the skeleton. Its main application concerns the diagnosis and subsequent monitoring and treatment of osteoporosis, a disease that leads to a progressive decrease in skeletal mass and, therefore, exposes patients who suffer from it to a significantly increased risk of fractures. In this specific application, the examination of Bone Densitometry is therefore recommended especially for women in menopause or in the assessment of body mass through which it is possible to determine the skeletal percentage, lean mass and fat mass present in the body. This investigation is useful both to know the exact body composition of subjects such as athletes and to evaluate any abnormalities present in subjects such as the obese or diabetics. Finally, bone densitometry is often used to integrate the overall diagnostic picture of cancer patients, transplanted, with endocrine pathologies, with celiac disease or with malabsorption syndromes.

Echocardiogram

The Echocardiogram is a diagnostic cardiological examination through which an ultrasound of the heart is performed, with the aim of visualizing the size, contraction, blood vessels associated with it and the flow of blood within the heart cavities. This investigation, carried out through the use of an ultrasound probe similar to that used in normal ultrasound examinations, is carried out to verify the patient's state of health in the case of suspected heart disease, such as myocardial damage, a state of heart failure, valvulopathy or a congenital heart defect. The examination consists of applying a gel to the chest wall, on which an ultrasound probe is placed to highlight the state of the heart. The transesophageal and color-Doppler echocardiographic transesophageal echocardiography examination is performed in our facility.

Ecodoppler

At the Villa Silvia Diagnostic Centre, Ecodoppler examinations of the Supraortic Trunks (TSA), Upper and Lower Limbs are carried out. The Supraortic Trunk Ecodoppler (TSA) is used to monitor the blood vessels that spray the structures of the head and for the diagnosis of cerebrovascular diseases. Through the TSA Ecodoppler it is possible to study the morphology of the vessels, recognize arteriosclerotic lesions (plaques) and detect the presence of venous thrombosis. The examination is non-invasive and is indicated for patients with stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), as well as for the diagnosis of aneurysms. It is also used for the screening of patients with cardiovascular risk factors (arterial hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, etc.) The Ecodoppler of the Upper or Lower Limbs is used, respectively, to study possible pathologies of veins and arteries of the upper or lower limbs. The investigation allows to precisely study the flows inside the blood vessels, to diagnose diseases such as varicose veins, thrombophlebitis and venous insufficiency, as well as some forms of tumors that can affect the venous and arterial systems.

Ultrasound Scanning

At the Villa Silvia Diagnostic Centre, ultrasound scans of the abdomen, chest wall, limbs and extremities are performed. Depending on the area concerned, the ultrasound examination is useful for the identification and diagnosis of organic pathologies affecting the liver, spleen, kidneys, pancreas, urinary and genital apparatus, as well as musculoskeletal, functional pelvic floor and salivary glands or thyroid glands. Ultrasound scanning is frequently used for the diagnostic investigation of patients with symptoms or suffering from broad-spectrum organic and functional diseases. Some specific examinations (such as ultrasound of the abdomen and urinary tract) require fasting on the part of the patient, with only liquids being taken during the pre-examination preparation phase.

Emg-Eng

Electromyography (EMG) and Electroneurography (ENG) are the two parts of a combined diagnostic examination, which covers the upper and lower limbs and aims to investigate diseases such as carpal tunnel syndrome, cervical radiculopathies, lumbosacral and all diseases of the peripheral nervous system. Through electrical nerve stimulation, carried out with a non-invasive stimulator placed on the surface of the area to be examined, this diagnostic technique can detect the suffering of nerves, nerve roots or nerve trunks. Its prescription is usually performed in the case of patients with symptoms such as reduced tactile sensitivity (hypoesthesia), frequent numbness or tingling in the limbs, muscle weakness (myasthenia).

Holter

The following Holter examinations are performed at the Villa Silvia Diagnostic Centre: cardiac (24-hour monitoring) and 24-hour pressure monitoring (commonly called "Holter pressorio"). The Holter examination consists in the continuous recording of the heartbeat; in the case of the pressurium it consists in the recording of blood pressure values every ten minutes during the day and every hour during the night. The cardiac Holter is mainly indicated in the investigation of arrhythmias. Holter pressure is indicated in many different cases of patients suffering from hypertension. Both examinations consist of the application of a recording device, which is delivered at the time of the examination together with a diary that the patient has to fill in specifying the different daily activities. At Villa Silvia is available the diagnostic investigation called "Event Recorder", which consists in giving the patient a small device to be placed on the chest wall when the patient has a disorder. The device sends the event recording to the cardiologist's smartphone, tablet or PC in real time.

Mammography

Echomammography is a specific ultrasound examination of the udder area. Its main use is to detect and prevent the onset of breast cancer. The latter is a very asymptomatic ("silent") form of cancer, so only a constant preventive work, based on mammographic examinations carried out at least once a year, allows it to be detected with the right timing, with the aim of implementing the necessary interventions to achieve the goal of complete healing. The preventive use of ultrasonography at fixed intervals is recommended for all women from the age of 30 years. When carrying out the examination, it is advisable to bring with you all the documentation resulting from the breast tests carried out previously, which could be useful to allow the radiologist to make any comparisons.

Ozone Therapy

Ozone therapy is a therapeutic technique that consists of the use of a mixture of gases (ozone and oxygen) for the localized treatment of cervical and lumbar disc hernias and the pathology of large joints. The therapy is carried out by inserting a thin needle into the affected part. Contrary to the most common practice, the Villa Silvia Diagnostic Centre uses CT technology (Computed Tomography) to identify the area to be treated with extreme precision, exponentially increasing the effectiveness of the process. This method has enabled us to treat over 9,000 patients since 2001, with a positive response rate of over 80%. It should be noted that Ozone therapy is suitable for all types of patients, as ozone gas has no pharmacological and/or allergic contraindications.

Body Monitoring (POLISONNOGRAPHY)

OSA is a syndrome characterized by recurrent episodes of upper airway obstruction during sleep, interesting the airflow in the nose, mouth, It is characterized by snoring, apnea and hypersomnia. The sleep is agitated, noisy and characterized by abrupt interruptions. Apnea can be central, obstructive and mixed Apnea must have a minimum duration equal to or greater than 10'' with flow reduced by 90% compared to basal for 90% of the duration of the event. In central apnea the thoracic-abdominal movements are absent while in obstructive apnoea they are in opposition; in mixed apnoea, the movements are absent in the initial part with appearance in the second portion. By means of Epwortth's questionnaire, daytime sleepiness is evaluated. The Patient will take the equipment home with a request to sleep from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. The Patient will be applied the monitor for the recording, the saturator, the bands and the probe for the recording of nasal flow. The patient is then summoned and a report with all the recorded parameters and diagnostic conclusions is delivered to the patient.

MRI scan

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging (NMR) examinations are performed at the Villa Silvia Diagnostic Centre on numerous areas of interest, including: Articular MRI, Brain and Rachide. MRI is a diagnostic imaging technique that, using a magnetic field and radio waves, can provide detailed images of the inside of the human body without the use of invasive techniques and without exposing the patient to ionizing radiation. Thanks to these characteristics, MRI is used for the diagnosis of a wide variety of pathologies, infectious, inflammatory and oncological, both of the skeleton and of the joints and internal organs. The Villa Silvia Diagnostic Centre uses the latest generation of instrumentation and is therefore able to offer "open" MRI examination, with greater comfort for the patient, who is not affected by the possible claustrophobic effect produced on some subjects by traditional "closed" MRI. Due to its technical peculiarities, MRI is not recommended for patients with pacemakers or metal clips of the body and brain.

Spirometry

Respiratory Tract Diseases in particular Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Bronchial Asthma are diseases with important social impact and represented an important factor of inability. In clinical suspicion, spirometry in addition to making the diagnosis, is useful for assessing the severity or progression of the disease, for assessing the preoperative risk and for assessing the degree of disability. The main contraindications are: hemoptysis, thoracic aneurysm, recent eye or abdominal surgery, pneumothorax, unstable angina or recent heart attack. Effort should be avoided at least in the hours prior to the examination, meal limitation, no smoking and no alcohol. The tests are performed standing upright if the patient is obese or in a sitting position with an upright torso; a nose clip and a mouthpiece, disposable and equipped with a filter, are applied to the connection tube with the braces; teeth and lips tighten the mouthpiece without the tongue obstructing the mouthpiece hole. The patient breathes in calmly and then takes a deep inhalation, followed by a rapid and decisive exhalation. At least three tests are carried out.

CT

Computed Tomography (more commonly CT) is a diagnostic imaging examination that, through the use of ionizing radiation (X-rays), allows to acquire images of body sections and to perform three-dimensional elaborations. At the Villa Silvia Diagnostic Centre, the examination is used to study numerous areas of interest, including: brain, orbits, petrous rocks, posterior cranial fossa of neurological interest and osteoarticular part. The use of CT scans is particularly useful for the diagnosis of post-traumatic degenerative diseases of the central and peripheral nervous system and osteoarticular apparatus. Since exposure to X-rays is not recommended for pregnant women, it is appropriate that this condition should be checked prior to this particular diagnostic examination.
